Infra–Site
This is my central concern: infra — below, beneath, further. What operates under us; under culture, under ideas; beyond recognition or conscious recall. In this sculptural approach, I aim to direct our attention to this without overt symbol or reference, but through space, place, and stone.
In my civic-scale work, this means placing granite — the material that has chosen me for this operation — in ways that respond to a site and its use, its history, its form. These are a type of threshold: blocks of stone, sometimes as big as buses, selected, broken, shaped, and reassembled with attention to gravity, balance, and friction; to mass, weight, and place; addressing the infrastructural pulse of an ontological need, a phenomenological stance, and an epistemological experiment.
What emerges is a public proposition to be encountered, moved through and beyond — and, perhaps, returned to.
I am looking for sites for this practice.
